Description
The Lhasa Apso has a long, heavy, double coat. They are a small dog that come in various colors. Their long hair is straight and dense. It has small, dark, deep-set eyes and heavy feathered ears.


Size
The adult male Lhasa Apso is 10-11 inches tall and 13-15 pounds. The adult female Lhasa Apso is slightly smaller then the male.


Coat
The coat of the Lhasa Apso is heavy and straight. It is also hard and very dense.


Color
The standard colors of the Lhasa Apso are black, black & tan, cream, golden, grizzle, red, red gold, and white.


Temperament
The Lhasa Apso is an intelligent dog that is a good watch dog. They are affectionate towards their owner and make a good pet, but are unsure of strangers.


Care
This breed should be groomed frequently if coat is left long. Some owners cut the coat short for easier grooming. Brush the long coat daily to prevent it from matting. Dry shampoo when necessary. Clean eyes and ears frequently.


Exercise
The Lhasa Apso needs daily exercise. They should be taken on a daily brisk walk. Playtime in a large yard while off leash is good for them as well.


Training
This breed does well to consistent, positive training. Reward the Lhasa Apso with successful training.


Shedding
The Lhasa Apso is an average shedder.


Barking & Howling
The Lhasa Apso has a rather large bark for a small sized dog. They can be a good watch dog for the size of their bark. Barking in general is loud and persistent.


Life Expectancy
A well cared for Lhasa Apso can live 15 or more years.


Health
Some of the more common problems in this breed are hip dysplasia, kidney problems, eye problems and bleeding ulcers. In general they are a health breed.
